Dust, Death, and the Body of the Earth: Notes on the Scales of Ecological Disaster
This essay follows dust across scales of ecological disaster: from particulate matter to volcanic magnitude, and from toxic accumulation to catastrophic rupture. Drawing on long-term anthropological fieldwork in southern Italy’s toxic and volcanic worlds, it moves between satellite views, images of scientific prediction, and Georges Bataille’s writings on dust and the subterranean abyss. Dust emerges as a medium between life and death, visibility and invisibility, the infinitesimal and the cosmic.
